STONELEAF
Short version: most residential walls in WNY land between $40 and $90 per square face foot. Here’s what moves that number — and the one line item you should never let anyone skip.
Three things set the budget before material ever comes up: height, access, and what’s behind the wall. A 3-foot wall your skid steer can drive to costs a fraction of a 6-footer up a slope behind a pool. Height also decides engineering — over 4 feet, most towns want geogrid and a stamped drawing.
Drainage. A wall doesn’t fall over because the blocks were cheap — it falls over because water sat behind it through a freeze. Perforated pipe and clean stone behind the wall add a few dollars a foot and decades of life. If a quote doesn’t mention drainage, that’s not a cheaper wall, it’s a shorter one.
A wall quote without drainage isn’t a cheaper wall. It’s a shorter one.
A 42-foot block wall in Clarence, 3.5 feet tall, straightforward access: excavation, compacted base below frost depth, drainage, caps, and haul-away came to roughly $8,400 — built in four days. The same wall with tight backyard access and a 6-foot height would roughly double.
