PRUNING QUESTIONS
When is the best time of year to prune trees in Upstate NY?

Late winter (dormant season) is ideal for most deciduous shade trees because cuts heal rapidly in spring and branch architecture is fully visible. Deadwood and hazardous limbs can be safely removed year-round.

How far should tree branches be trimmed back from roof shingles?

We recommend a minimum of 8 to 10 feet of clearance from rooflines, gutters, chimneys, and siding to prevent shingle abrasion, stop squirrels and rodents from accessing attics, and allow sunlight to dry moss.

Does pruning improve tree health and storm resistance?

Yes! Removing deadwood and thinning dense branches allows high winds from lake-effect storms to pass harmlessly through the canopy rather than acting as a giant sail that snaps limbs.
